<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0cm;font-size:11pt;font-family:&quot;Calibri&quot;,sans-serif">The pandemic offered a novel opportunity to evaluate
cognitive psychological theories about how people reason about cause and effect
(for example, how viruses spread), and how they update their mental models with
new information. The pandemic further revealed competing moral and normative
frameworks for how society should respond to a public health threat. However,
public debate about the pandemic response seemed to be conflating causal claims
(e.g., how to stop the spread of the virus) with normative claims (e.g., should
we stop the spread of the virus). <span></span></p>
