<u>Session description</u></div>
<div class="elementToProof" style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0px; line-height: 18.4px; margin: 0px 0px 8pt; font-family: Aptos, Aptos_EmbeddedFont, Aptos_MSFontService, Calibri, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: black;">
Subduction zones drive plate tectonics, regulate long-term climate through deep volatile cycling. Southwest Pacific is the ideal laboratory to study the full-spectrum of the subduction processes (subduction initiation, intermediate-deep earthquake, plume-slab
interaction, polarity reversal, eclogite exhumation) in a complex plate boundary zone. Recent deployment of broadband OBS in the Tonga-Samoa region and Matthew-Hunter zone will provide new seismic imaging (surface and body waves models, seismic anisotropy
patterns) of these regions. The development of OBS seismic phase pickers provides a unique opportunity to revise earthquake catalogs and slab geometries. New numerical simulations framework gives an opportunity to revise our knowledge on subduction processes.
This session aims to discuss the SW Pacific subduction zones from a multi-disciplinary approach (geophysics, geochemistry, geomorphology, numerical modelling) to attempts to reconcile observations from different fields. We invite contributions from colleagues
working on Papua New Guinea, Matthew-Hunter zone, Vanuatu, Tonga-Samoa-Lau basin, Kermadec subduction zone or Puysegur trench.</div>
