To gauge the interest and training requirements of the Australian astronomy community, we are asking you to fill in a short survey. The survey will take less than five minutes, and your input will help us prioritise which workshops and tutorials to prepare first. If you feel like your training requirements weren?t assessed in the multiple choice question, you will also have the chance to leave any suggestions regarding computational training at the end of the survey. The survey responses are collected anonymously, and results will be reported in an aggregated format. Details: "We are pleased to announce that the 2017 OAD Annual Call for Proposals is now open. This call has been altered from previous years to enhance engagement with project leaders and the potential impact of projects. The new call for proposals consists of two application stages. The Stage 1 proposal (due 31 May 2017) is open to proposers from anywhere in the world. Proposers submit a brief online application with the key aspects of their project. Stage 1 proposals, typically only 2 pages long, will be scored by the OAD Task Forces based on a set of defined criteria. We are now accepting applications for Stage 1. Selected proposals will be invited to submit a more comprehensive Stage 2 application. During Stage 2, teams will engage and work closely with the OAD, its Regional Offices where applicable, and other experts, who will provide guidance and feedback to improve the application. Based on these interactions, proposers may modify their Stage 2 application and submit by 15 September 2017. The revised Stage 2 applications will be reviewed by the OAD Task Forces, which will make recommendations on projects to be funded. After final approval from the Steering Committee, applicants will be notified of the results in November 2017. A comprehensive new "Getting Started" section provides background information on Astronomy for Development, project design, needs analysis, monitoring and evaluation, surveys, assessments, etc. Please refer to this section before you start your application. Two PhD scholarships, funded by the Australian Research Council, are available to work on observational studies of galaxy formation and evolution. In particular, the projects will focus on the formation of lenticular (S0) galaxies. One PhD position will be based at the Centre for Astrophysics & Supercomputing at Swinburne University (Melbourne) under the supervision of Professor Duncan Forbes and Professor Warrick Couch. The other PhD position will be at the School of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Queensland (Brisbane) under the supervision of Professor Michael Drinkwater. Both PhD students will become part of a larger project investigating lenticular galaxy formation from both an observational and simulation perspective. The simulations are lead by Dr Kenji Bekki at the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research at the University of Western Australia (Perth). The successful candidates will need to have excellent grades and demonstrated potential for astronomical research. Any experience in imaging and/or spectroscopy would be an advantage. The successful candidates will have the opportunity to observe with large telescopes such as the AAT and Keck telescopes. International candidates may need to pass english language requirements of the respective University. The PhD scholarship is tax-free at around AUD $27K per year with tuition fees waived for 3 years (an extension of an extra 6 months may also be possible). Some funds are available for telescope and conference attendance. Applicants should send a CV, a transcript of grades of past degree(s) and a brief statement of research interests and skills relevant to the PhD project. Applicants should inlcude the email addresses of 2-3 people that can be contacted as referees. Applicants should also indicate if they have a preference for either the Swinburne University or the University of Queensland position. Enquiries about the PhD scholarship and project should be sent to Duncan Forbes (dforbes at swin.edu.au) for Swinburne University or Michael Drinkwater (m.drinkwater at uq.edu.au) for University of Queensland. The deadline for applications is 31st May 2017. Duncan Forbes > ????????????????????????? "The standard you walk past is the standard you accept? ????????????????????????? It will be 12:30-1:30pm Western time (which should be 2:30-3:30pm on the East coast). This talk naturally follows on from Danail?s lecture on Fourier analysis given a few weeks ago (which is already hosted on the ANITA site at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFhNHpE9xwo) and from David Parkinson?s wonderful lecture on Gaussian process modelling (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkYQZI6neMY) Don?t miss it! Details: Location: ICRAR/UWA Ground floor seminar room Time: 12:30-1:30pm WA time Live stream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fs9I3bJDRJ0 Speaker: Cullan Howlett Title: Correlations, power spectra and Gaussian random fields Abstract: Measuring the spatial and temporal correlations between observables in our Universe enables us to understand the physics driving these phenomena. Examples include measurements of the correlation between large-scale galaxy positions, between the locations of star-forming regions inside individual galaxies and of the time/frequency dependence of transients. In this lecture, I will introduce the concept of correlation, the correlation function and why this is such a powerful tool. An example of how to estimate this from a cosmological point of view will be given. I?ll then present the Fourier counterpart to the correlation function, the power spectrum, and detail how this can be measured, including the effects of aliasing, finite sampling and window functions. I?ll finish with a brief overview of higher order clustering statistics. ?????? More details of the 2017 lecture series at: http://anita.edu.au/lectures/ ??????
