From pete.wheeler at uwa.edu.au Tue Apr 4 09:13:57 2017 From: pete.wheeler at uwa.edu.au (Pete Wheeler) Date: Tue, 4 Apr 2017 07:13:57 +0800 Subject: [ASA] Calling for IAU 100th anniversary ideas Message-ID: Greetings, The IAU is asking for some big ideas to mark their 100th anniversary in 2019?it will also be 50 years since the Apollo 11 Moon landing. Proposed activities do not need to be a new project, they could be something that already exists and can be adapted to fit the scope of the centenary. The format for how the year of events will be coordinated is still being worked out, but as with IYA 2009 it?s likely there'll be some big cornerstone projects that everyone can get behind, along with some core messaging that the broader community can get excited about rather than just the the fact that IAU is turning 100. If you have ideas you?d like to submit, please send them to Pete Wheeler, IAU National Outreach Coordinator for Australia, at pete.wheeler at icrar.org by April 30th. SCIENCE AT LOW FREQUENCIES IV UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY http://www.physics.usyd.edu.au/salf_iv Main Conference: December 13th - 15th 2017 Optional Workshops: December 12th A slew of new radio telescopes, as well as substantial upgrades to existing facilities, has led to an explosive growth in capability at low radio frequencies. This increase in capability is driving exciting progress over a range of fields, including high redshift 21-cm signatures of cosmic dawn and the epoch of reionization, pulsars and transients, planetary and exoplanetary magnetospheres, sky surveys, space weather and the Sun, cosmic rays and the ionosphere. We are happy to welcome you to the fourth edition of Science at Low Frequencies, to be held in Sydney in December 2017. This meeting will provide a forum to share and discuss early science results and techniques, as well as to plan a coordinated path forward to next generation facilities. *Scientific Organising Committee* Tara Murphy ? Last week?s lecture from Danail Obreschkow on Fourier Analysis is already going viral: -------------------------------------------- Presenter: Danail Obreschkow Title: Fourier Analysis Abstract: Fourier analysis is a powerful mathematical framework built upon the idea of representing the world in waves and cycles. This lecture will introduce the basic ideas of this theory and illustrate them using numerical examples in the R language. After establishing the concepts of Fourier series, Fourier transforms and discrete Fourier transforms, the lecture highlights several key applications, including spectral analysis, aperture synthesis, data compression, mode decoupling and correlation functions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFhNHpE9xwo ?????????????????????? Contact Aaron Robotham for more details about the lecture series. Each lecture is designed to be a long-lasting, useful training resources on specialised topics in theoretical astrophysics. Following the previous ITSO Science symposia in 2012 and 2015, this meeting will feature the research being conducted with the international telescopes supported by ITSO. The Symposium will feature invited and contributed talks from leading Australian users of the Gemini, Magellan, Blanco, and Keck telescopes and is open to everyone, not just current users. Students and early-career researchers in particular are encouraged to attend, and travel subsidies will be available. There will also be opportunities to discuss instrumentation, time allocation, and data reduction for these facilities. Registration is free, and lunch, a symposium dinner, morning and afternoon teas, and transport to/from the ANU campus will be provided. The deadline for registration is *Monday 1 May 2017*. For information about the venue, accommodation options, a list of registered participants, and to register your attendance please visit the symposium web page . We still have some slots available for contributed talks, for which a title and abstract should be provided in the registration form. We look forward to seeing you in Canberra in mid-May.
