As part of the discussions on that topic, the Subaru representatives would like to explore the ways in which Australia could engage with the Subaru instrumentation program. AAL is therefore organising a half-day workshop where Australian instrument scientists can meet with Prof. Nobuo Arimoto (Director, Subaru Telescope), Dr Ikuru Iwata (Associate Director, Subaru Telescope), and Dr Yosuke Minowa (Subaru Telescope AO scientist). The workshop will be held at Mount Stromlo (in the Common Room) on Wednesday, 10 August from 10am to 4pm. Morning coffee will be available from 9:30am. The goals of the workshop are: 1. to identify areas where Australia could potentially make significant in-kind contributions to Subaru instrumentation as part of a possible partnership arrangement; 2. to identify specific small developments that Australia and Subaru could immediately initiate in order to develop the potential in-kind contributions and increase mutual confidence in working together. The workshop will include open discussions on specific instruments and technologies of interest, such as: * Subaru PFS (Prime Focus Spectrograph) * Subaru ULTIMATE (next-gen wide-field AO-fed NIR MOS) * Subaru GLAO and LTAO systems * Wide-field and IFU spectrographs * Fibre positioning systems * Adaptive optics systems * Optical and infrared detectors * Software for instrument control and data analysis The current list of participants and provisional talk titles is attached. In order to keep the workshop focussed, numbers will be limited. If you are interested in attending this workshop, please email Director.RSAA at anu.edu.au as soon as possible. Registration will remain open until the end of this week. This is a two-day workshop being held at the University of Sydney on Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 August, and celebrates the career (and 92nd birthday) of Bruce Slee, who is one of the pioneers of radio astronomy - e.g. his 1949 paper made the first optical identification of the radio sources Centaurus A (NGC 5128) and Virgo A (M87). Although long retired, Bruce continues to carry out research, with emphasis on active stars and clusters of galaxies. This workshop will celebrate and honour Bruce?s significant contribution to Radio Astronomy, now approaching 70 years. The program will combine historical talks on Bruce's work with science talks that provide a modern perspective, describing current work by a new generation of astronomers in low-frequency radio surveys, variable radio sources and the interstellar and intergalactic medium. I would particularly like to encourage Honours and PhD students to attend this workshop. The invited speakers include Ron Ekers (CSIRO) on 'Australian radio astronomy 1945-1960', Cleo Loi (Cambridge University) on 'Ionospheric studies with the MWA' and Joss Bland-Hawthorn (USyd) on 'The Galactic Centre and Fermi Bubble'. The complete program of talks is now available on the conference web page at: http://www.caastro.org/event/2016-slee Workshop Details ? Dates: 16-17 August 2016 ? Venue: Sutherland Room, Holme Building, University of Sydney, Sydney, NSW ? Cost: The cost of the workshop is $50 REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN I do hope you can join us for what promises to be an interesting and informative meeting. Please register as soon as possible if you plan to attend.
