From Paul.Francis at anu.edu.au Mon May 2 14:11:18 2016 From: Paul.Francis at anu.edu.au (Paul Francis) Date: Mon, 2 May 2016 04:11:18 +0000 Subject: [ASA] SSO 2.3m Call for Proposals Message-ID: Dear Observer, The closing date for observing proposals for time on the ANU/RSAA 2.3m telescope at Siding Spring Observatory (SSO) in the quarter 1st AUGUST 2016 - 31st OCTOBER 2016 is 23:59 May 15, 2016. Instruments available: Nasymth A: WiFeS Nasymth B: Imager or echelle. Observing proposals must be submitted electronically via the RSAA web pages. Full instructions are available at http://rsaa.anu.edu.au/observers/observing-rsaa. You will need the most recent versions of the template and style files which can be obtained from the web pages. *************************** PLEASE NOTE *********************************** (1) WiFeS users are requested to indicate on the proposal form whether they will be present at the telescope or observe remotely. Remote observing is available only to experienced WiFeS observers but can now be carried out from Australian sites other than Mt Stromlo subject to technical feasibility. (2) Proposals for use of the 2.3m will only be considered if the PI is from the ANU or from another institution that contributes financially or has contributed financially and directly to the building and/or operations of the 2.3m telescope and its commissioned instruments. These institutions include those that collaborated on the successful ARC LIEF bid to fund the Blue Arm of the WiFeS spectrograph and the successful ARC LIEF bid for the WiFeS upgrade. All such proposals will be judged on their scientific merit alone. There will be no quotas placed on the amount of time available for qualifying institutions. These policies will remain in place for the present. Currently eligible (non-ANU) institutions are the AAO, UQld, UNSW and USyd as well as Swinburne, Monash and Macquarie. (3) Macquarie, Swinburne and Monash proposals have a certain amount of guaranteed time. All proposals wishing to claim this should state explicitly in the abstract how much of this time they wish to claim. (4) Limited first night support at the telescope is provided to new observers. Nevertheless new observers are strongly encouraged to be present at the telescope at least one night before their observing run to familiarise themselves with the telescope and instrument operating systems. The latest information on using the telescope and its instruments can be found at http://rsaa.anu.edu.au/observers/obsering-rsaa. (5) Proposers are reminded to limit their scientific case to TWO pages, including figures and references. *************************************************************************** If you have technical problems in using the web-based submission process, please email tacinfo at mso.anu.edu.au. After the announcement of the $1.1 Billion National Innovation and Science Agenda (NISA) last December, it was unlikely additional measures would follow. Some measures include: * $110.5 million to Geoscience Australia to produce geographic modelling of mineral, groundwater and petroleum resources across South Australia and Northern Australia; * $15 million for a national carp control plan; * The Bureau of Meteorology will receive funding to maintain its supercomputer capabilities, with the total amount commercial-in-confidence; * The Great Barrier Reef Plan and Trust will get a $171 million boost, extending the program to make the reef more resilient; * $12 million for an extension of the Australian Astronomical Observatory, taking it out to 2019/20 * (The CRC program is described as providing some of the savings to fund the AAO. The exact amount is not clear.) Many members will be interested in the fate of the controversial higher education reforms of 2014/15 (full fee deregulation and a 20 per cent cut to funding per student place). The 20 per cent cut has remained in the assumptions that underlie the Budget. However, policy decisions have not been finalised on these and other significant higher education issues. Instead, the Government has issued a paper as part of the Budget. "Driving Innovation, Fairness and Excellence in Australian Higher Education" canvasses a wide range of issues and options, with policy determinations to be finalised by year's end. There will be initiatives of interest to members buried in the detailed Portfolio Budget Statements for individual Federal Departments. Direct links to all of these documents are included. As usual we welcome any input, hints and useful intelligence as we continue to dig through the documents in the coming days. Regards, Catriona Jackson, STA CEO. Top 5 Under 40 - Applications closing 8 May UNSW and ABC Radio National have teamed up once again for the 2016 Top 5 under 40 - a national search to provide a voice to early-career researchers to communicate their science. The time capsule will be sealed during the ASA meeting in Sydney, and (we hope!) will be opened at the ASA meeting 50 years from now. We are currently seeking suggestions from *you* for items to be placed in the capsule. These may include photos, documents, small artefacts or other memorabilia that you may have in your possession or be able to suggest. We welcome ideas outside this list! We want to represent the Australian astronomical community in 2016 - who we are and what we do. We also intend to take photos during the 50th ASA meeting (including the welcome reception and conference dinner) that will be included in the time capsule If you have any ideas, please submit them via the form below: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1eLTvDiF2wSSZob0KNdplzpwHgV1xa3_tBTU2v1cwn34/viewform Please be aware that the object will need to fit (alongside other objects) within a 45L box of dimensions 60cm x 30cm x 25cm. We will be ordering the time capsule from timecapsulesaustralia.com, and you can see what it will look like below: [Inline images 1] Suggestions which are selected to be part of the time capsule will be included on a manifest that also highlights the contributor/suggestor of the item, so this is your chance to be famous in 50 years time! Please feel free to suggest anything you think might be relevant. The final decisions will be made by the ASA 50th LOC with approval from the ASA Council. The closing date for suggestions is 15th June 2016, to allow us time to process the suggestions and organise for their inclusion. If selected, you will either be asked to bring your object to the ASA meeting or (if electronic) send it to us beforehand for printing on appropriate archival paper. This is the major conference in nuclear physics, held only every three years and September should be a nice time in Adelaide, with Spring just starting. This year, we will have seven nuclear astrophysics parallel sessions with some emphasis on the nuclear physics connection of nuclear astrophysics in a broader context. We will select a longer invited talk (25mins) for each session followed by up to five contributed talks from the submitted abstracts. Some potential topics include * Experimental facilities (for nuclear astrophysics) * Nuclear physics experiment and theory (for nuclear astrophysics) * Nucleosynthesis processes * Supernovae and Neutron star mergers, and connection to gravitational waves * Novae, X-ray bursts, and accreting neutron stars and white dwarfs * Neutrino astrophysics * Galactic chemical evolution We would like to encourage you to submit abstracts if you have not done so already. The early bird registration deadline is May 13, 2016. Speakers will be informed by mid June, 2016. We hope to see you in Adelaide in September. Please feel free to further distribute this announcement. Best wishes, Ani Aprahamian Alexander Heger ????????????????????????? This means that anyone who will attend the HWSA and is required to vote in this election will need to organise their vote before the HWSA. A summary of how to vote can be found here: http://www.aec.gov.au/voting/ways_to_vote/ On election day there will be limited transport to any nearby polling places and interstate voting centres (there may not be any of the latter nearby), and so we recommend that people attending the HWSA place an early vote. This can either be done in person, at an early voting centre in your electorate, or by applying for a postal vote online. See http://www.aec.gov.au/FAQs/Voting_Australia.htm#travelling for more information. Information on applying for a postal vote can be found here: http://www.aec.gov.au/election/pva/ If you have any questions regarding voting before the HWSA, or the HWSA in general, please do not hesitate to contact me. Kind regards, Chris Herron, on behalf of the 2016 HWSA LOC -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:
