From itso at aao.gov.au Mon Mar 21 11:24:40 2016 From: itso at aao.gov.au (International Telescopes Support Office) Date: Mon, 21 Mar 2016 11:24:40 +1100 Subject: [ASA] Call for Magellan Proposals in Semester 2016B Message-ID: <56EF3F48.5040000@aao.gov.au> 2016B Call for Magellan Proposals Proposals for Australian access to the Magellan telescopes for Semester 2016B (mid-Jul 2016 to mid-Jan 2017) are due by: *5:00pm AEST on Thursday 7 April 2016** * A separate call for Gemini proposals in Semester 2016B with a 31 March 2016 deadline was issued earlier - please see https://www.aao.gov.au/itso/gemini/apply. A reminder too that Keck proposals for 2016B are due *tomorrow* (i.e. 22 March) - see https://www.aao.gov.au/itso/keck/apply. There will likely be a single MegaCam f/5 block in Oct/Nov 2016 (depending on the RA range of accepted proposals). Due to upgrade work the MagAO adaptive optics system will *not* be offered for science in 2016B. In recent semesters demand for instruments mounted on the Clay telescope has significantly exceeded that for instruments on the Baade telescope. In order to help address this issue the MagE instrument has been moved from Clay to Baade. Applicants are encouraged to consider whether their science might also be possible using the instruments on Baade (IMACS, FourStar, FIRE, MagE), should their preferred instrument on Clay not be available due to scheduling constraints. Complete information about all Magellan instrumentation on offer, travel funding, and the application procedure is available at https://www.aao.gov.au/itso/magellan. For any enquiries about Australian usage of Magellan please contact the AAO's International Telescopes Support Office (itso at aao.gov.au). The conference will be held from 18-22 July 2016 at the Pullman Cairns International Hotel, Cairns, Australia. The hosts will be ARC Centre of Excellence for All-sky Astrophysics (CAASTRO). Welcome drinks will be held on Sunday 17 July 2016. The search for a physical understanding of the dark sector continues, and progress will depend on the intricate interplay of new, large cosmological datasets, the predictions of physical theories, and accurate simulations. Which combinations of observable signatures are most interesting for distinguishing between models? How can we mitigate systematic errors in these measurements? What are the most exciting new theoretical developments? The conference will cover a diverse range of scientific topics including large-scale structure, gravitational lensing, peculiar velocities, and supernovae as cosmological probes. The next ATUC meeting is to be held at the ATNF headquarters in Marsfield on the 2nd and 3rd of June 2016. The programme will be posted on the ATUC web pages a week or two before the meeting. On the morning of the 2nd, an Open Session will be held that consists of reports and updates on the various aspects of ATNF operations. All users are welcome to attend the Open Session which usually runs until mid afternoon. An agenda for the Open Session will be made available on the ATUC web page. In the afternoon of the 2nd and all day on the 3rd, ATUC will hold a Closed Session, during which a report to the ATNF Director is drafted. If you, as a user (or potential user) of the ATNF, are aware of any issues that need to be raised at the next ATUC meeting, or would like to offer praise or feedback on ATNF activities, please contact any member of ATUC over the next few weeks.
