Swinburne is advertising two postdoctoral positions (application deadlines Jan 31):

——————

Postdoctoral Researcher (Observational Astronomy) with Duncan Forbes

More info and application instructions: https://jobregister.aas.org/node/52889

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral researcher to work with Professor Duncan Forbes and Dr Richard McDermid. This observational project focuses on novel 2D spectroscopy of nearby galaxies. The applicant will take a leading role in the observations, reduction and analysis of data, and publication. Time will also be available for personal research interests. The appointee will be based at Swinburne University Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing in Melbourne (recently voted one of the best cities in the world to live in). The Centre is one of Australia's largest astronomy groups, with over 35 staff/postdocs and 35 PhD students from more than 20 different countries. Swinburne has 15 nights annually on the Keck telescopes and its own GPU supercomputer. The appointee will work closely with Prof Forbes, and have opportunities to visit Dr McDermid at Macquarie University in Sydney. The appointment is for 2 years with a 6 month probation period. Essential criteria: A PhD in observational extragalactic astrophysics; strong research skills and publications in peer-reviewed journals; excellent communication skills; ability to work well in a team and help supervise research students. Experience with 2D spectroscopy is a plus.

Postdoctoral position in Galaxy Evolution with Prof. Karl Glazebrook & Dr David Fisher

More info and application instructions: https://jobregister.aas.org/node/52972

Applications are invited for an Australian Research Council funded Post-Doctoral Research Associate position in observational astrophysics in the Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia to work with Centre Director Prof Karl Glazebrook and Dr. David Fisher.

The appointee will play an important role in an international collaboration to study angular momentum in galaxies through observations. We are open to a broad range of applicants from extragalactic astronomy, and we especially encourage applicants interested in projects working with Integral Field data from the DYNAMO and SAMI surveys. In addition to the in hand SAMI data, the team intends to undertake an observing campaign with Keck. There is already in hand data from Gemini, Keck, HST and PdBI on the DYNAMO sample of galaxies.

This position is part of a collaborative ARC Discovery Project including Dr. Danail Obreschkow and Dr. Claudia Lagos (at UWA/ICRAR in Perth) and Prof. Roberto Abraham (at the University of Toronto). The UWA/ICRAR component will simultaneously hire a complimentary theory-based postdoc (AAS JRID52984 https://jobregister.aas.org/job_view?JobID=52984) who will work closely with the Swinburne PDRA. Though not necessary, we encourage ideas from applicants that may bridge the theoretical and observational aspects of angular momentum in galaxies.

We would encourage the successful applicant to pursue an independent research program and to collaborate with other projects at Swinburne. Swinburne houses an active astronomy group, and is Australia's most rapidly growing astronomy department. Swinburne astronomers have instutional access to W.M. Keck telescopes in Hawaii, and regularly obtain observing time on the AAT, Gemini, HST, Magellan, ATCA and Parkes telescopes. The Centre has GSTAR, the Australian GPU Supercomputer for Theoretical Astrophysics, available in house as well as access to state-of-the-art 3D visualization facilities.
