From eryanweber at swin.edu.au Mon Nov 30 07:32:53 2015 From: eryanweber at swin.edu.au (Emma Ryan-Weber) Date: Sun, 29 Nov 2015 20:32:53 +0000 Subject: [ASA] 2nd announcement: IAU Symposium 321 "Formation and evolution of galaxy outskirts" - Registration and abstract submission now open In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ IAU Symposium No. 321 "Formation and evolution of galaxy outskirts" 14 - 18 March 2016 Second announcement - October 2015 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ http://galaxyoutskirts.org ------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is the second announcement of the IAUS321 "Formation and evolution of galaxy outskirts" Symposium that will be held in Toledo (Spain) from 14 to 18 March 2016. This symposium aims to provide the reference for the study of the outskirts of galaxies, both in terms of our current understanding and to prepare an optimal exploitation of upcoming facilities. The stellar, dust and gas content of galaxy outskirts will be discussed, going from resolved stellar populations in the Local Group to the study of high-redshift systems. Such a broad approach is needed to improve our knowledge on the assembly and evolution of these elusive regions and to establish their role on the evolution of galaxies as a whole and on their interplay between these galaxies and the intergalactic medium surrounding them. During five days, from March 14th to 18th 2016, participants will discuss galaxy outskirts, which have been very hard to observe and therefore often ignored, while enjoying the enriching atmosphere of the medieval "City of the Three Cultures", Toledo (Spain), since 1986 UNESCO World Heritage Site and on 2016 also Gastronomy Capital of Spain. As part of this second announcement we now invite interested colleagues to register using the online form available at the following link: http://galaxyoutskirts.org/index.php/registration-2/. Even if you already pre-registered you should still fill this up. The most important deadlines of the symposium are the following: * Registration deadline if financial support is requested is Dec. 1st 2015 * No registration will be accepted after December 18th 2015 * Oral contributions will be communicated on January 1st 2016 * The registration fee is 300EUR (proceedings & symposium dinner included) * All payments are due February 1st 2016 You can find instructions on how to get good hotel fares for symposium participants in our webpage at http://galaxyoutskirts.org/index.php/lodging/ We recommend you to reserve your room ASAP (the symposium code is IAUS321). All SKA member countries were represented and France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Malta and the European Southern Observatory also attended the meeting as observers. Membership of the SKA looks set to grow with several countries expressing interest in joining the project. The meeting approved the budget for 2016; the draft outline of the observatory operations model; the revised terms of reference for the Science and Engineering Advisory Committee; the power strategy; and performance review processes for senior executive staff. Progress and information reports included telescope design; progress on the intergovernmental treaty (Convention) negotiations; a revised advanced instrumentation development program; and lessons learned from the project design review process. Overall, the project appears to be making good technical progress. In SKA news closer to home, you may have seen the Western Australian Government has approved a power supply agreement for the MRO between Horizon Power and CSIRO - more details are available in Premier Barnett's media release. I continue to be pleased with the progress to date and am looking forward to further engagement with governments and stakeholder groups as the policy, design and operational elements of the project come together. The survey is done under the auspices of the IAU Division C Commission C2 Communicating Astronomy with the Public Working Group Science Communication Research in Astronomy: littlehttp://www.iau.org/science/scientific_bodies/working_groups/261/. This is a study intended at 'active' astronomers (i.e. currently conducting research). If you are an active astronomer but do not carry out any communication activities with a non-specialist public (e.g. public lectures, interviews, etc.), please still use the link below to the survey to let us know. The questionnaire has been prepared to receive responses from ?non-communicators?. Your responses will help us understand barriers researchers may face in public communication. This study will improve our understanding of science communication in astronomy. It is the first comprehensive study to map the practices of the astronomical community worldwide. Your collaboration and full and honest answers are essential to its success. The study is being carried out by the Lisbon University Institute and the London School of Economics and supported by the European Southern Observatory, Leiden Observatory and the International Astronomical Union. As a small-thank you, we will donate mounted images and books from the European Southern Observatory to 10 survey participants picked at random. Please include your email at the end of the questionnaire to take part in the prize draw. The deadline for survey completion is December 18.
