Subject: [ASA] AIP Congress: The Art of Physics
Message-ID: <53BB3BC5.1070106@aao.gov.au>
Dear Colleagues,
The abstract deadline for this year's AIP congress 'The Art of Physics'
has been extended to July 18th. The congress is being held in
Canberra from December 7-11.
Details of the AIP Congress can be found at
http://www.aip2014.org.au
and the abstract server can be found at
http://www.aip2014.org.au/abstracts/
Many ASA members have already submitted abstracts and two of the
plenary speakers are astronomers.
Some of you may know of Prof. Robin Storer of Flinders University, who
was an expert in MHD theory, and contributed much to Australian science
(particularly in fusion) over a 40+ year career. Unfortunately, Robin
lost a battle with cancer last year.
A colleague, Em. Prof. Bob Dewar, suggested it would be appropriate to
commemorate Prof. Robin Storer's contributions to plasma physics
(especially theory) at the Australian Institute of Physics Congress with
a dedicated session on "MHD theory in laboratory, space and
astrophysical plasmas". Bob has received the imprimatur of the idea from
Robin's family, should the session be feasible. The idea also has the
support Plasma Session Program Committee, as well as the Conference
Chair, Prof. John Howard, and Program Chair, A/Prof. Joe Hope. The Solar
Terestial and Space Physics Program Chair, Prof. Iver Cairns, and
Astronomy Program Chair, Dr Chris Lidman, have also agreed to co-badge
the session.
We hope to tribute a session commemorating Robin providing there are
enough selected talks in a MHD theory area. The AIP Congress has also
recently extended the abstract deadline to July 18, thus providing an
opportunity to lodge an abstract in this area, and indeed any other area
of astronomy.
I would also be grateful that should you be interested in contributing
to the dedicated session you could also let Matthew Hole
(matthew.hole at anu.edu.au ) at the ANU
know so that he can earmark the contribution accordingly.
Kind Regards,
Chris Lidman

Subject: [ASA] OZSKA Town Hall Meeting at the ASA
References:
Message-ID:
Dear colleague
Although many of us are excited about the prospect of Australian involvement in the Square Kilometre Array, and many of us are involved in the planning in some capacity, we do not yet have a "community" of those who are, or who would like to be, involved in the SKA. As a starting point to build such a community, I have organised an SKA Town Hall meeting on Friday 25 July, on the last day of the ASA annual scientific meeting, from 12.35 to 2pm. A snack lunch will be provided for attendees..
The aims of this meeting (and associated activities) are:
* To build a community of scientists who are knowledgeable about SKA and who will be ready to make full use of it when it is constructed
* To facilitate Australian science involvement in SKA
* To facilitate collaboration between Australian SKA scientists and our colleagues in South Africa and other SKA member countries
* To maximise the science from SKA
* To provide advice to Australian SKA consortium members as required.
The meeting will kick off with a brief overview of the SKA and of Australia's role in it, but most of the time will be devoted to questions and discussions from the floor. Topics might include:
* What will be built in Australia?
* What will Australia's role be?
* What will be the key science goals?
* How will this impact on other Australian astronomy facilities?
* How do we use the Australian precursors (ASKAP, MWA) to optimize the SKA design and prepare for SKA?
* How will the SKA be managed?
* How will we get our hand on SKA data?
* When will it be finished?
* How can an astronomer get involved in planning the science for the SKA?
* Is it only for black-belt radio astronomers, or can other astronomers use it?
* What will it do for my science?
* Where do we go from here?
There is no registration fee, but we do need to know numbers for catering, and lunch will only be provided for those that have pre-registered. If you would like to attend, please email Amanda.Gray at csiro.au before 20 July.
Further details will be made available on http://bit.ly/ozska

Sixth and FINAL Announcement:
2014 Astronomical Society of Australia Annual Scientific Meeting
LESS THAN TWO WEEKS TO GO!
We have almost 300 delegates but registration is still possible for the 2014 Annual Scientific Meeting. The ASM promises to be a very interesting and diverse meeting in this decadal planning year.
The Harley Wood Winter School is now at capacity (85). However, there may be an option to register for sessions only (no accommodation available). Please contact ASN Events for details if you are interested.
THE FINAL ASA MEETING PROGRAM IS NOW AVAILABLE!
The program committee are delighted to announce that the final program of talks and events is now available. We apologise for all those that missed out on an oral presentation. Only ~50% could be accommodated this year. It was very tough for the SOC to carefully decide who to allocated talks to from the very high quality range of abstracts received and to accommodate so many conflicting requirements.
Please visit the conference website to view the program and also to download a pdf copy. The final program will also be available in the meeting booklet in the welcome pack on registration.
For further information on both the HWWS and the ASA annual meeting as well as links to the registration details, social program and other ASA activities, visit the dual-meeting website at:
http://www.asa2014.mq.edu.au/
We look forward to welcoming you to Macquarie University in our 50th anniversary year.
