The next deadline is *** Sunday, 1 June 2014, at 23:59 *** (Australian Eastern Standard Time, i.e. UTC + 10 hrs) Applications are welcomed from all astronomers, worldwide. The following instruments are available for service observations: 2dF+AAOmega, IRIS2, UCLES/UHRF, KOALA+AAOmega, 2dF+HERMES. Service mode programs using HERMES during August are especially welcome in this call. Service Programmes expire after 18 months. Current programmes submitted before 1 Nov 2012 will be purged from the queue. If you have an existing programme in this category, you are invited to resubmit this round. Please see http://www.aao.gov.au/science/observing/apply/service for more information about the AAT Service Programme and application forms. This school aims to provide knowledge and hands-on experience of radio astronomy to people new to the field, including PhD students and post-doctoral researchers. The format of the school will be similar to previous CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science radio schools, with a mix of lectures and practical sessions. Material will be presented by both radio astronomers and engineers. No prior experience with radio astronomy is required. The school will cover a diverse range of topics across all areas of radio astronomy, with a focus on interferometric observations. We will soon be inviting participants to enrol for the Radio Astronomy School. Attendance will be limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. The registration fee will be $250 for students (and $300 for non-students) and will cover lunches, teas/coffees and two evening meals. Participants will be encouraged to present posters highlighting their research. For more information, please see the school webpage: http://www.atnf.csiro.au/research/radio-school/2014/index.html Regards, Shari On behalf of the organising committee ------------------------------------------------------------- Dr Shari Breen ARC DECRA Fellow CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science PO Box 76, Epping NSW 1710, Australia Phone: +61 2 9372 4325 Fax: +61 2 9372 4310 ------------------------------------------------------------- -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Bryan Gaensler Editor-in-Chief, PASA From growell at physics.adelaide.edu.au Thu May 29 17:53:49 2014 From: growell at physics.adelaide.edu.au (Gavin Rowell) Date: Thu, 29 May 2014 17:23:49 +0930 (CST) Subject: [ASA] Mopra telescope status Message-ID: By now most of you may have heard about the proposed budget cuts and their effect on CASS's astronomy operations. In particular, the CSIRO plan to cease expenditure on the Mopra telescope. Operations on Mopra are currently funded for three years (to the end of 2015) via an external consortium comprising the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, the University of New South Wales, and the University of Adelaide. The recent budget cuts however, have necessitated revisiting Mopra's viability. As a result, we are now in discussion with CASS in order to pursue future funding models, and hence secure the medium to long-term viability of Mopra. Mopra is an instrument in its prime and scientifically productive. It provides important complementary radio observations to many other national and international facilities. It is hoped that these discussions will lead to new arrangements to avoid Mopra's loss to the Australian and international astronomical communities.
