Dear all,

You are invited to attend a one-day Workshop on "How To Be An Effective Referee" organised by the Early Career Researcher Chapter of the Astronomical Society of Australia. It will be held on the 29th November 2013 at the Sydney Institute for Astronomy, University of Sydney, 44-70 Rosehill Street, Redfern.

The aims of the workshop will be to learn and enhance refereeing skills. We intend this event to be very interactive, with attendees working in groups to practice refereeing example papers and proposals. The invited speakers are

• Joss Bland-Hawthorn (University of Sydney)
• Warrick Couch (Australian Astronomical Observatory)
• Bryan Gaensler (University of Sydney/CAASTRO)
• Lisa Kewley (Australian National University)
• Naomi McClure-Griffiths (CSIRO Astronomy & Space Science)

All members of the ASA are welcome to attend, however we particularly encourage participants from researchers in the early stages of their careers. There is a limit of 40 participants, so please register early to avoid disappointment.

This workshop is being sponsored by ARC Centre of Excellence for All-sky Astrophysics (CAASTRO) and the ASA. There is no fee to attend, and coffee and lunch will be provided during the day.

If you would like to attend, please register at:

on behalf of the organising committee
(David Parkinson, James Allison and Daniel Bayliss)
and the interim Steering Committee of the ECR chapter.
