Senior Postdoctoral Researcher in Observational Extragalactic Astronomy
Applications are invited for a Swinburne University funded senior post-doctoral researcher to work with Professor Duncan Forbes and his team. Professor Forbes has recently been awarded an Australian Research Council Outstanding Researcher Award to study the halos of elliptical galaxies along with their globular clusters and dwarf galaxies. The overall aim of the research is to understand galaxy formation and evolution. This will be tackled using observations from major telescope facilities and innovative analysis techniques. The applicant should be able to take a leading role in the observations, reduction and analysis of data, and the writing of journal publications. The observations will involve both spectroscopic and imaging data. Some time will be available for personal research interests.

The appointee will be based in the Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing at Swinburne University, working under the supervision of Prof Forbes. The Centre is one of Australia's largest astronomy groups, with over 30 staff/postdocs and 30 PhD students from more than 20 different countries. Swinburne has 15 nights per year on the 10m Keck telescopes and operates its own GPU supercomputing facility. It has a lively research culture. The campus is located in the cosmopolitan suburb of Hawthorn, in Melbourne. Melbourne was recently listed as one of the best cities in the world to live in.

Essential criteria: A PhD in observational extragalactic astrophysics; strong research skills and a demonstrated publication track record in peer-reviewed journals; excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to work well in a team and help supervise research students.

Swinburne is a Federally-recognised "Employer of Choice for Women" and encourages applications from indigenous people, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, people with disabilities, women and men.

Applications should be sent by email and must include a CV, bibliography, and a brief statement of research interests. Applicants should arrange to have three letters of reference sent to Prof Forbes at the above address by the application deadline of 1st Sept. 2013. Applications in PDF format are preferred. A starting date of 1st Dec 2013 is preferred but is negotiable.

Appointment will initially be for one year, with the possibility of a further 2 year extension subject to performance. Remuneration includes a base salary of $AUD81,290 per annum plus standard 4-week annual leave and a generous 17% superannuation entitlement.
