SkyMapper Research Fellow – The Australian National University

The Research School of Astronomy & Astrophysics (RSAA) at the Australian National University is seeking to appoint a researcher to work on the theory of Supernovae and Related Objects as part of the SkyMapper Transient Search. This position is funded as part of Prof. Brian Schmidt’s Australian Research Council’s Laureate Fellowship.

The position will undertake a vigorous, self-directed theoretical research program in an area relevant to the SkyMapper telescope’s transient survey, and will contribute to the success of the SkyMapper telescope and its corresponding surveys by working constructively with other members of the SkyMapper team. Successful candidates will have access to the world-class ANU super-computing facilities, the SkyMapper 1.3m survey telescope and its corresponding survey datasets, the well-instrumented 2.3m telescope, which is equipped with a new, high-efficiency optical integral field spectrograph (WiFeS), and to Australia’s other national radio and optical/IR facilities.

The position will be expected to co-supervise graduate and undergraduate students and will have the opportunity to apply for additional research funding through the competitive grant schemes of the Australian Research Council. Successful candidates will be offered attractive remuneration and assistance will be provided with relocation expenses.

The appointment will be for three years at a level of Research Fellow, Academic Level B (AU$83,773 - AU$95,407pa) plus 17% employer superannuation contributions. The position may be taken part-time.
