The MQ Department of Physics and Astronomy's research outputs and postgraduate student numbers have undergone rapid expansion over the last 5 years especially since the creation of the MQ research centre in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Astrophotonics (MQAAAstro). This new centre is one of the largest and most active astronomy research groups in Australia with about 50 current staff, postdoctoral fellows, higher-degree research (HDR) students and support staff. For further information please visit http://physics.mq.edu.au/astronomy/ Australian Gemini Office (AusGO): The Australian Gemini Office hosted by the Australian Astronomical Observatory coordinates Australian usage of large offshore facilities including the Gemini 8.1 metre telescopes in Hawaii and Chile; the Keck 10 metre and Subaru 8.2 metre telescopes in Hawaii (via a time exchange agreement with Gemini); and the Magellan 6.5 metre telescopes in Chile. AusGO provides the Australian community with the support and advice needed to help maximize our return from our investment in these facilities The Role: We are seeking applications from outstanding early career astronomers from any area of astronomical research. Ideally candidates will have research strengths that complement those of the MQ astronomy, astrophysics and astrophotonics research group (MQ AAAstro) within the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the research activities of the Australian Astronomical Observatory (AAO). The successful candidate will share time equally between pursuing active astronomical research and undertaking appropriate teaching and other academic activities within the Department of Physics and Astronomy at MQ, and in supporting the observing and research activities of the Australian Gemini and Magellan user communities through the Australian Gemini Office (AusGO) based at the AAO. This joint position offers excellent opportunities to develop strong collaborative research projects between MQ and the AAO.
